Memory loss usually occurs due to the aging process. But the study found that a person's memory will decrease faster if he was nearing the time of death of approximately 2 to 2.5 years prior to death.
In a second study found a person's memory will decline faster in the 2 to 2.5 years prior to death. Both studies were published online 4 April 2012 in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Researchers enrolled 174 people with no memory problems and memory endurance test held for up to 6-15 years before his death. After his death, scientists examined the brains of participants.
The study found an average of about 2 to 2.5 years prior to death, a person's memory and thinking skills tend to decline along approximately 8-17 times faster than before.
"We used the end of life as a reference for research on memory loss and not at birth," said study author Robert S. Wilson, PhD, of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, as quoted by Medindia on Saturday (07/04/2012).
Hiroko H Dodge, PhD, of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, said the change in mental capacity for 2-3 years before death is not associated with Alzheimer's disease.
"Memory and cognitive decline is likely to involve several biological changes in the brain that are specific to the end of life," said Hiroki who is also member of the American Academy of Neurology.
Ability to think normally healthy adults will begin to decline at age 45-49 years, but gently. But the condition of this decline will decrease much faster on his deathbed.
